Bhubaneswar: After the release of the season’s first floodwater from the Hirakud Dam, there is a significant increase in the water level of the Mahanadi River, on Tuesday.
As per reports, about 1.7 lakh cusecs of water were reported flowing through the Mundali barrage by 6 am today.
The floodwater reached Mundali after passing through Khairamal and Baramul, following the release of floodwater by the Hirakud Dam by opening its 20 gates in three phases on the previous Sunday.
The excess floodwater is slowly being released from the Mundali barrage from yesterday. Although there is no threat of flooding in low-lying regions, waterlogging has raised concerns among the people.
The Special Relief Commissioner (SRC), in an official notification released on July 28, directed collectors of nine districts, including Sambalpur, Subarnapur, Boudh, Nayagarh, Angul, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, and Puri, to remain alert and monitor the situation after the release of water by the Hirakud Dam.
Meanwhile, people residing on the riverside were alerted not to enter the Mahanadi, or allow their domestic animals to graze close to the river.
