Malkangiri: Malkangiri police on Sunday arrested five persons for allegedly extorting money from people posing as Maoists.
According to reports, the accused persons used to claim themselves as Maoists and demanded money from the people. They were threatening the targeted persons of killing them in kangaroo court if they failed to relent to their demand.
“A team from the Chitrakonda police station arrested Jagu Hantal, Mano Pangi, M Narayan, Binod Jena, and Umakanta Madhavi and seized a gun, Maoist letterheads, and three mobile phones from their possession. All were forwarded to the court today,” informed Malkangiri DSP Laxmidhar Swain.
Recently, they threatened to kill the Naib Sarpanch Bhaktram Shisha,and a journalist in kangaroo court.
According to the police official, Bhaktaram Sisa, Naib Sarpanch of Badapada Panchayat had filed a complaint at Chitrakonda police station about the Maoist threat.
Three of the five accused are locals of Badapada and two are from Malkangiri.
