Bhubaneswar: The Rairangpur Additional District and Sessions Judge Court in Mayurbhanj district on Friday sentenced a man, Narendra Behera alias Kuku (40), to seven years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) for raping a married woman.
The court also imposed a fine of ₹5,000 on the convict. If he fails to pay the fine, Behera will have to serve an additional one year in prison. The verdict was delivered, based on the police investigation, statements of nine witnesses, and other evidence presented during the trial.
According to case records, the incident occurred on the evening of June 11, 2020, when the victim was returning home from a market under the Bisoi police limits in Mayurbhanj district. Behera offered the woman a lift on his motorcycle, promising to drop her at her home.
However, upon reaching a secluded forested area, Behera stopped the bike, dragged the woman into the bushes, and raped her. The victim later narrated the incident to her family, who filed a complaint at the Bisoi police station. Behera was subsequently arrested following a police investigation.
