Bhubaneswar: Notorious criminal Ghanshyam Behera alias Kalia from Purushottampur area was shot in the knee during a police encounter in the district on Friday.
According to police, Purushottampur IIC Kulamani Sethy and his team had a confrontation with Kalia on the Kodala-Singhasini road. Kalia allegedly opened fire at the police team. In retaliation, police fired back and Kalia sustained a bullet injury to his knee.
It is learnt that Kalia has multiple serious cases registered against him, including murder, attempt to murder, theft and dacoity. He was also wanted in three cases registered at Purushottampur police station and had been absconding.
Police have taken Kalia into custody and further investigation is underway.
