Bhubaneswar: Keeping an eye on the approaching Cyclone ‘Montha’, Minister, Revenue and Disaster Management reviewed the preparedness of various Government Departments to tackle the potential impact of the cyclone.

The meeting was attended by the Development Commissioner, ACS cum-Special Relief Commissioner, Principal Secretary, Energy, and Secretaries of line Departments.

The Energy Department presented its preparedness and the steps undertaken to minimise the potential impact of the cyclone on power infrastructure and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply across the State. DISCOMs and OPTCL are closely monitoring pre-cyclone and post-cyclone operations for rapid response and restoration.

Preventive maintenance has been completed at Primary and Distribution Sub-Stations (33 KV/11 KV lines), and adequate stocks of critical equipments such as transformers, poles, and conductors have been secured. The Department has ensured the availability of critical materials at identified sites and arranged pole masters, man-lifters, and tree pruners for early restoration works. To enable rapid movement of technical teams, special arrangements have been made for the deployment of staff and equipment at sites in short notice.

A Central Control Room at each DISCOM is functioning 24×7 to coordinate with field teams and provide real-time assistance. Coordination with the call centre has also been strengthened to keep affected consumers informed about restoration progress.

In addition, several proactive actions have already been taken to strengthen the system. Lightning arresters have been installed at crucial locations, more than 8000 manpower (TPSODL and TPWODL), and required number of vehicles have been mobilised to meet any emergency situation.

Mobile Distribution Sub-Stations have been readied for deployment, while additional transit stores are operational in addition to main stores to ensure the timely availability of materials.

Tower wagons have been deployed across TPSODL areas for tree cutting and trimming, and interposing poles have been installed to reinforce vulnerable line segments. ASKA lights, DG sets, and water pumps have also been provided at each division to support emergency restoration work.

Special arrangements are in place to maintain power supply to hospitals, water supply systems, and other critical services. More focus has been given to eight high-alert districts — Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, and Nabarangpur.

Consumers can report power-related emergencies through the 24×7 toll-free helpline 1912. The Department has urged citizens to stay indoors during strong winds, avoid contact with electrical equipment during rain or flooding, and keep children away from waterlogged areas.

The Energy Department remains committed to ensuring public safety and reliable power supply through proactive planning, real-time monitoring, and coordinated response with district administrations and disaster management authorities.
