Odisha Govt To Bring Special Law To Check Obscenity At Opera Shows

Bhubaneswar: Amid growing concerns over the obscene dance shows at Opera pandals, the state government is considering introducing a new law to prevent vulgarity on entertainment stages to protect public decency.

Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan stated that a law will soon be enacted to stop obscene dancing in Opera. The state government has taken the issue seriously and discussions are underway. The minister plans to discuss this matter with opera party owners.

The ‘Jatra Artists and Workers Union Odisha’ and ‘Rajya Kalakar Maha Sangh’ had previously demanded that the state government ban obscene dance. Although the government has since implemented a law and notified all District Magistrates and SPs, the union complains that it is not enforced.

Interestingly, Jatra programme has seen a rise in visitors, including conservative individuals attending with family members. However, controversy often surrounds the obscene dances during melody programme before plays, despite the state government’s strict order against it. Some organisations continue to defy the ban and perform obscene dances on stage.
