Bhubaneswar: Odisha Police have intensified their crackdown on criminals, anti-social elements and illegal trade in narcotics and liquor under the special ‘Daman’ campaign launched ahead of the forthcoming festivals.
The campaign, conducted since September 21 under the direction of DGP Vinaytosh Mishra, has so far resulted in the execution of 1,448 non-bailable warrants (NBWs) and proceedings against 1,012 persons under Section 129 of the BNSS, according to a police press note issued on Sunday.
The coordinated drive involved the district police, Commissionerate Police, Railway Police and other police units across the state.
As part of the anti-narcotics operation, police registered 89 NDPS cases and arrested 109 persons. Around 8.13 tonnes of ganja were seized, while 19,387 ganja plants were destroyed. Police also seized 394.645 grams of brown sugar and 1,066 bottles of cough syrup.
The crackdown on illegal liquor trade led to the registration of 1,707 Excise Act cases and arrest of 140 persons. Police seized 10,298.24 litres of illicit country liquor, 2,922.409 litres of foreign liquor and 1,092.54 litres of Aska-40, besides 800 kg of poch and 81 litres of mahuli liquor.
Police also registered 46 cases related to gambling and arrested 67 persons, recovering ₹4,36,086. In cases involving forced collection of donations, 16 cases were registered, 12 persons arrested and ₹10,520 seized.
Six cases were registered against illegal arms, ammunition and explosives, leading to the seizure of five guns, one revolver, four rounds of ammunition, one magazine, two empty cartridges, 2.5 kg of gunpowder and two swords.
Besides, seven cases were registered against organised crime, with 18 persons arrested.
To check the movement of criminals and prevent the smuggling of narcotics, liquor, arms and other prohibited items, police conducted 1,830 blocking and border-sealing operations across the state. Checking on inter-district and inter-state roads was also intensified.
DGP Mishra said police action would continue during the coming days to ensure peace and security during the festival period and further strengthen crime control and preventive policing.
