On Engineers’ Day, Vedanta Aluminium Celebrates Engineers Shaping The Metal Of The Future

Bhubaneswar: Every day, engineers across India are transforming ideas and raw materials into ground-breaking solutions that power modern life. On National Engineers’ Day, celebrated in honour of Bharat Ratna M. Visvesvaraya, it is an opportunity to recognise the people whose expertise drives progress across communities and modern manufacturing industries.

Engineers operate at the very core of Vedanta Aluminium’s world-class operations across Odisha and Chhattisgarh. From responsible mining to alumina production to the creation of specialised aluminium products for advanced sectors such as electric mobility, renewable energy, infrastructure and aerospace, their work shapes every stage of the value chain and spans some of the largest plants in the world. Every tonne of aluminium produced, the metal of the future, reflects the combined efforts of engineering professionals across disciplines. The journey of aluminium begins at the mines, where mining and geological engineers identify mineral deposits and plan their responsible extraction.

Bauxite ore is processed at the company’s mega alumina refinery in Kalahandi, Odisha, where chemical and process engineers convert it into alumina, the key raw material for aluminium. From there, alumina moves to the company’s smelters in Jharsuguda, Odisha and Korba, Chhattisgarh, where metallurgical engineers oversee its conversion into molten aluminium through electrolysis.

Next, molten aluminium is shaped into a wide range of products by mechanical and product development engineers, from billets, wire rods and primary foundry alloys to slabs and rolled products. Supporting this entire ecosystem are civil, structural, safety and environmental engineers, who help ensure reliable infrastructure, safe operations and responsible resource management. Together, these disciplines transform a natural resource into a versatile metal.

As Rajesh Kumar, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, adds, “Producing the metal of the future requires the collective expertise of expert engineers across numerous disciplines. From designing efficient processes and maintaining complex assets to developing new products and ensuring sustainable operations, our engineers turn their deep scientific knowledge into innovative solutions that create added value for the nation. Their contribution is central to building a globally competitive and future-ready aluminium industry in India.

“Modern engineering continues to evolve, and building the next generation of engineering talent is therefore equally important. Vedanta Aluminium recruits graduates from leading institutions across the country, including the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), along with several other premier engineering and management colleges. Through hands-on experience with advanced manufacturing systems, digital tools and data-driven technologies, young engineers develop a deeper understanding of how an integrated industrial ecosystem operates.

“Top engineering talent is fundamental to managing the scale and complexity of our operations. We are focused on bringing together experienced professionals and promising young engineers from India’s leading institutions and giving them the opportunity to learn, lead and solve meaningful industrial challenges. By combining technical depth with exposure to sustainability, digital technologies and business leadership, we are developing engineers who can shape the future of manufacturing,” says Praveen Purohit, CHRO, Vedanta Aluminium.

With operations spanning mining, alumina refining, aluminium smelting, power generation and value-added manufacturing, Vedanta Aluminium offers engineers the opportunity to work across some of India’s largest and most complex industrial ecosystems. In FY26, the company produced more than half of India’s aluminium at 2.45 million tonnes, a scale made possible by the expertise and dedication of engineers who drive performance, reliability and continuous improvement across the value chain. As manufacturing becomes increasingly digital, engineers are also deploying technologies such as automation, advanced analytics, artificial intelligence (AI) and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) solutions.

Across Vedanta Aluminium’s value chain, engineers are the driving force behind every stage of the journey. As the makers of the metal of the future, they are not only shaping one of the world’s most versatile materials but also contributing to the infrastructure, technologies and industries that will define the future.
