Jeypore: A man was killed and another seriously injured after being attacked by a swarm of honey bees in a forest near Marad village under Harada Guda Panchayat in Borigumma block of Koraput district on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as Shyam Sundar Kandhapan of Marad village. According to local sources, Kandhapan and several others had ventured into the nearby forest to collect mangoes when the incident occurred.
While the group was gathering mangoes, a swarm of honey bees nesting on a tree suddenly attacked them. Kandhapan reportedly came under a severe attack and succumbed to multiple bee stings on the spot.
Another person, identified as Sunduru Santa of Risei Padar village, sustained serious injuries in the attack. He was rescued and shifted to a hospital by ambulance for treatment.
Following information about the incident, a complaint was lodged at B. Singhpur Police Station. Police personnel reached the spot, conducted an inquiry and sent the body for post-mortem examination. The body was later handed over to the family members.
The incident has triggered concern among local residents, with demands being raised for government assistance and compensation for the bereaved family.
