Puri: The Puri district administration has launched a detailed investigation into the recent speedboat capsize incident at the Puri beach, which involved family members of former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly.
According to Puri Collector, the mishap occurred during a recreational water sport activity when the speedboat reportedly overturned. Lifeguards stationed nearby acted swiftly and rescued all tourists involved without any major injuries.
Puri Sub-Collector has been tasked with leading the inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident. District Magistrate Siddharth Shankar Swain, speaking to reporters on Tuesday, confirmed that the administration is examining multiple aspects, including whether the speedboat operator was functioning beyond the permitted area of operation.
“We have received allegations that the operator had extended activities beyond the authorized zone. If found true, this would be a serious violation,” said Swain. “The Sub-Collector is verifying the operator’s permissions and the exact area of operation. Prima facie, it appears the activity was conducted outside the permitted limits.”
The Collector further stated that if any element of criminal negligence is established during the inquiry, appropriate legal action will be initiated under relevant sections.
While water sports operators are generally expected to self-regulate based on weather and safety norms, the administration now plans to introduce stricter measures to prevent such incidents.
“This type of accident is rare, but we are now reviewing all safety protocols, including banning speedboat operations during rough weather conditions,” Swain added.
The district administration assured that corrective steps will be taken to enhance the safety of tourists engaging in water sports in the region.
