Kataka: A life-size statue of former Odisha Chief Minister Nandini Satpathy, the state’s first woman chief minister, was unveiled at Dayashram Park under Ward No. 9 of the Kataka Municipal Corporation (KMC) on Friday.
The statue was unveiled by former Orissa High Court judge Justice Bimal Prasad Das at a ceremony presided over by KMC Mayor Subash Singh. Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation Mayor Sulochana Das attended as the special guest, while Barabati-Kataka MLA Sofia Firdous was present as the guest of honour.
Several former ministers, social workers, public representatives, writers, lawyers and civic officials attended the event and recalled Satpathy’s contribution to Odisha’s social and political life. Speakers highlighted her role in opening new avenues for women’s leadership in the state and recalled her firm leadership, political convictions and association with the common people.
They also noted Satpathy’s contribution to Kataka’s development and public life during her tenure as chief minister, saying the statue would help preserve her legacy and inspire future generations. Sculptor Laxmidhar Rana, who created the statue, and painter Rabinarayan Rath were felicitated during the programme.
