Veteran Odia Singer Geeta Patnaik Passes Away

Bhubaneswar: Veteran Odia playback singer Geeta Patnaik passed away on Sunday (February 15, 2026) at a private hospital in Cuttack after suffering a brain stroke on Friday (February 13).

According to reports, Patnaik experienced uneasiness while attending a literary meeting in Bhubaneswar on the night of Thursday (February 12). She was immediately rushed to Capital Hospital around 1 am, and later shifted to a private hospital in Cuttack at 3 am, where she was admitted to the ICU. Despite medical efforts, she suffered cardiac arrest and died at around 6:18 pm.

Speaking to the media, her brother-in-law and eminent journalist Pradosh Patnaik said, “On February 12, while attending a literary meeting in Bhubaneswar, Geeta felt unwell and was put on a ventilator. Doctors informed us this evening that she suffered cardiac arrest and passed away. Tomorrow, her body will be brought to her residence in Cuttack, where her last rites will be performed.”

Geeta Patnaik, who had co-sung with veteran singer Akshaya Mohanty, had a career spanning over three decades in the Odia music industry. She lent her voice to several superhit Odia songs, including “Phur Kina Udigala Bani” from the movie Jajabar. Some of her other popular songs include “Emiti Pua Ku Mu Baha Huenti”, “Baha Mu Hebi”, and “Mo Dehare”.

Known for her distinctive voice and artistic versatility, Patnaik has been a prominent figure in Odia music since the 1970s. Her contributions left an indelible mark on Odisha’s cultural landscape, and her passing has left the music fraternity and fans in deep mourning.

Her demise marks the end of an era in Odia playback singing, with admirers remembering her not just for her melodious voice but also for her dedication to the art form over decades.
