Bhubaneswar: Vigilance apprehended Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Badagaon Police Station, Sundargarh district, while accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000 from a roadside dhaba (eatery) owner.
The ASI, Arupa Nanda Das, allegedly demanded the money to help resolve a pending case in the complainant’s favour and to ensure the smooth operation of his business without police harassment. When the hotel owner refused, Das reportedly threatened to arrest him, prompting the victim to lodge a complaint with Vigilance.
Acting on the tip-off, Vigilance officers laid a trap and caught the ASI red-handed while he was receiving the bribe amount today. The entire tainted cash of Rs 25,000 was recovered from his exclusive possession and seized as evidence.
Following the successful trap, simultaneous searches are underway at four locations linked to Das to probe disproportionate assets (DA). Rourkela Vigilance PS has been registered against him under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018. Investigation is in progress.
