Bhubaneswar: A Special Vigilance Court in Bolangir on Tuesday sentenced Sibaram Sahu, a retired Assistant Tax Collector of Subarnapur Municipality, to two years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 for misappropriating government funds.
According to an official press release, Sahu was charge-sheeted by Odisha Vigilance under Section 13(2) read with 13(1)(c)(d) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and Section 409 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The charges stemmed from his failure to deposit government money collected as water supply connection fees, construction fees, cabin license fees, weekly market fees, and parking fees into the Daily Collection Register of the Municipality, as mandated by the Orissa Municipality Rules, 1953. Instead, Sahu issued money receipts to taxpayers but misappropriated the funds.
Following the conviction, Odisha Vigilance will now approach the competent authority to stop Sahu’s pension.
