Bhubaneswar: Several villages in Keonjhar district were plunged into mourning on Wednesday as the mortal remains of five women migrant workers, who were killed in a tragic ammonia gas leak in Tamil Nadu, were brought back home.
The bodies were received in Kodipasa, Talachampei, Rangamatia, and Tangiri villages. Two of the deceased hailed from Tangiri village, while the others belonged to Kodipasa, Talachampei, and Rangamatia respectively.
Heart-wrenching scenes were witnessed as grieving family members and villagers gathered to pay their last respects.
It is pertinent to mention that the deceased women were working at a seafood processing unit in Periyapalayam of Tiruvallur district in Tamil Nadu, where the ammonia gas leak occurred.
The total death toll of Keonjhar natives in this incident has now climbed to seven though two more bodies are yet to reach the district.
Notably, the victims had migrated to Tamil Nadu in search of livelihood to support their families. Local residents expressed deep sorrow over the loss of these young women who left their homes hoping for a better future.
