Baripada: Around 20 students of the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) at Chandua under Kuliana block in Mayurbhanj district fell ill on Saturday following a suspected diarrhoea outbreak, prompting health authorities to rush a medical team to the residential school.
Four students, whose condition was reported to be critical, were admitted to the Kuliana Community Health Centre (CHC) for treatment.
According to reports, the affected students complained of loose motion, vomiting and abdominal pain shortly after consuming food and water on the school campus. They were immediately provided first aid before those requiring advanced treatment were shifted to the CHC.
Following the incident, a special medical team from the Kuliana CHC visited the school and conducted health examinations of all students and staff. The team also collected samples of drinking water and cooked food from the hostel for laboratory analysis to ascertain the exact cause of the outbreak.
Health officials suspect that contaminated drinking water or food may have triggered the illness, though they said the cause would be confirmed only after the test reports are received.
