Kendujhar: A couple was allegedly murdered over suspicion of practising witchcraft at Baliparbat village under Daitary police station in Kendujhar district, with their bodies later recovered from a village well on Saturday.
The deceased have been identified as Khageswar Soren and his wife, Tuni Soren, residents of Baliparbat village. The couple had been missing since June 27, prompting their family members to lodge a missing complaint after an initial search failed to trace them.
Acting on the complaint, police launched an investigation into their disappearance. During the probe, the bodies of the couple were recovered from a well in the village.
According to preliminary findings, the accused allegedly tied the hands and legs of the victims before dumping their bodies into the well after killing them.
Police have arrested five persons in connection with the case. Four of the accused have been identified as Siba Munda, Rengo Banra, Ganesh Hansda, and Anup Hembram. The identity of the fifth accused has not been disclosed.
The crime is suspected to have been triggered by allegations related to witchcraft.
Further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events and the motive behind the killings.
