Balangir: An elephant was rescued from an abandoned well near Dhumamara Hill in Hirapur village under the Muribahal Range in Odisha’s Balangir district on Tuesday following a rescue operation that lasted several hours, Forest Department officials said.
The elephant, which was part of a herd that had strayed from a nearby forest, accidentally fell into the well and became trapped, prompting villagers to alert the Forest Department.
Forest officials rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. As the well was filled with water, the team first drained it using an electric generator to facilitate the rescue.
The officials then used a crawler excavator to safely bring the elephant out of the well after several hours of coordinated efforts.
The elephant was successfully rescued, bringing the operation to a safe conclusion.
Further details about the elephant’s condition and whether it rejoined the herd were not immediately available.
