Baragada: Police have seized 3,156 bottles of illegal cough syrup from a vehicle in Baragada district and arrested one person in connection with the seizure, officials said on Monday.
The arrested accused has been identified as Sahid Husen, police said.
According to Baragada Superintendent of Police Rabindra Nath Satapathy, the seizure was made in the Tora village area under Baragada Rural police station following a tip-off about the transportation of illegal cough syrup.
Police intercepted a Bolero and found 3,156 bottles of illegal cough syrup inside the vehicle, the SP said.
The police also seized the Bolero and a mobile phone from the possession of the accused.
Satapathy said the alleged kingpin in the case had been released on bail around 15 days ago. However, he and some others managed to flee from the spot, he said.
The arrested accused will be produced before a court on Monday, and further investigation is underway, police said.
Baragada Sub-Divisional Police Officer A.B. Silpa said police have intensified patrolling and enforcement activities ahead of Durga Puja to curb the illegal transportation of excise products, cough syrup and drugs covered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
“Acting on a reliable tip-off about the transportation of cough syrup in the Baragada Rural police station area, we conducted a naka check in the area. During checking, we intercepted a vehicle and recovered 3,156 bottles of cough syrup,” Silpa said.
Police are investigating the source of the cough syrup and its intended destination, police said.
