Bhubaneswar: Darshan of the Holy Trinity in Puri’s Jagannath Temple will be restricted for four hours on Wednesday due to the Banakalagi ritual of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra.
The Shree Jagannatha Temple Administration (SJTA) informed that the Banakalagi ritual will be performed by Dutta Mohapatra servitors between 5.00 pm to 9.00 pm today, during which darshan at the 12th-century shrine will remain suspended.
It is worth mentioning here that the Banakalagi is a secret ritual also known as ‘Srimukha Sringara’. During this ritual, the servitors apply fresh colours on the idols of the deities to restore their original look.
The ‘Banaka’ is prepared from different types of natural colours like Hingula, Haritala, Kasturi, Keshar, and the glue of Kaintha. The SJTA has made adequate security arrangements around the temple because of the Banakalagi rituals.
