Bhubaneswar: The well-marked low pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of north Odisha and West Bengal coasts has intensified into a Depression.
The system was centred near latitude 21.1°N and longitude 87.2°E, about 50 km south-southeast of Balasore, 60 km northeast of Chandbali in Odisha, and 60 km south-southwest of Digha in West Bengal.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that the Depression is very likely to move west-northwestwards and cross the North Odisha coast between Chandbali and Digha, close to Balasore, within the next 24 hours.
After crossing, it is expected to continue moving west-northwestwards across North Odisha and North Chhattisgarh during the subsequent 24 hours. The IMD has issued heavy rainfall warnings for several districts of Odisha today.
Extremely heavy rainfall is very likely at one or two places over Bargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Nuapada, and Bolangir districts. Heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy spells at isolated places is also expected over Angul, Boudh, and Kandhamal districts.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places over Jajpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Dhenkanal, Kalahandi, Nabrangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Gajapati, Ganjam, and Nayagarh districts. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall is expected at one or two places over Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghapur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Malkangiri, Puri, and Khurda districts.
For Monday, the IMD has issued an Orange Warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places over Bargarh, Sambalpur, Angul, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, and Bolangir districts.
A Yellow Warning has been issued for heavy rainfall at one or two places over Cuttack, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nawrangpur, and Nayagarh districts.
People in the affected districts have been advised to stay alert, avoid water-logged areas, and take necessary precautions against flooding and landslides in vulnerable regions. Farmers and fishermen are also requested to monitor official updates closely.
