Bhadrak: A driver was killed and two others sustained critical injuries after the car they were travelling in rammed into the rear of a stationary container truck on National Highway-16 near Mahatab Chhak in Bhadrak district on Tuesday morning.

The accident, which occurred amid continuous rain and poor visibility, also triggered a massive traffic jam on the busy highway.

According to reports, the car was travelling from Balasore to Cuttack when the driver allegedly failed to notice the stationary container truck parked along the roadside near Mahatab Chhak. The vehicle crashed into the rear of the truck with tremendous force, leaving its front portion completely mangled.

The driver died on the spot due to the impact, while the two other occupants sustained grievous injuries. They were rescued by local residents with the assistance of Fire Services personnel and rushed to the Bhadrak District Headquarters Hospital (DHH), where their condition was stated to be critical. The identity of the deceased had not been established at the time of filing this report.

On being informed, personnel from the Town Police reached the accident site and launched a rescue operation. The damaged vehicle was later removed from the highway with the help of a crane, restoring normal traffic movement.

The mishap led to traffic congestion on NH-16 for several hours, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded before the traffic was finally cleared and normal movement resumed.
