Bhubaneswar: Odisha Vigilance has secured the conviction of a former senior clerk in a bribery case. Gobardhan Meher, former Senior Clerk, Tahasil Office, Bhatli in Bargarh district, presently Senior Clerk, Revenue Section, Collectorate, Bargarh, was charge-sheeted by Odisha Vigilance.
He was charge-sheeted under Sections 13(2) r/w 13(1)(d)/7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 from a farmer to release a cheque in his favour towards drought compensation.
On Wednesday, the Special Judge, Vigilance, Bargarh convicted Meher and sentenced him to undergo rigorous imprisonment for four years with fine.
Following conviction, Meher was taken into custody and sent to jail to serve his sentence. Odisha Vigilance said it will now move the competent authority for his dismissal from service following the conviction.
