Bhubaneswar: A blistering heatwave swept across Odisha on Sunday, pushing temperatures to extreme levels, with Jharsuguda emerging as the hottest place in the state at a scorching 44.8°C, according to the evening bulletin of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The intense heatwave conditions prevailed across western and interior districts, where the mercury hovered well above 40°C in multiple locations. Sonepur recorded 43.7°C, followed by Titlagarh at 43.6°C, Bhawanipatna at 43.4°C, and Bolangir at 43.1°C. Sambalpur and Boudh also reported high temperatures of 43.0°C each, reflecting the widespread severity of the heat.
Several other towns remained in the grip of intense heat, with Sundargarh at 42.8°C, Rourkela at 42.7°C, Nayagarh and Nuapada at 42.5°C each, and Hirakud at 42.4°C. Talcher recorded 41.5°C, while Phulabani touched 40.4°C. Keonjhar, Paralakhemundi and Bargarh hovered around the 40°C mark.
In contrast, coastal districts experienced relatively lower temperatures, though humidity added to discomfort. The twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack recorded 35.5°C and 35.0°C respectively. Puri and Paradip reported 32.1°C and 32.3°C, while Gopalpur was the coolest in the state at 31.5°C.
Other regions also reported high temperatures, including Khordha and Nabarangpur at 38.5°C, Jajpur at 38.2°C, Baripada and Koraput at 37.8°C, Bhadrak and Dhenkanal at 37.5°C, and Rayagada and Kendrapada at 37.4°C.
The IMD has issued an advisory urging people to take precautions against the heatwave. Residents have been advised to avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, stay hydrated, and take extra care of children, the elderly and those with health conditions.
