Bhubaneswar: Odisha has crossed the 1000 mm mark in monsoon rainfall this year, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

As per data available from Meteorological Centre of Bhubaneswar, the state has recorded 1006.5 mm of cumulative rainfall between June 1 and August 19, 2026. This is 220 mm more than the normal rainfall of 786.5 mm for the same period. The overall departure stands at 28% above normal, placing the state in the ‘excess’ category for the season so far.

The data shows that most parts of Odisha have received excess to large excess rainfall. Fourteen districts recorded excess rainfall ranging between 20% to 59% above normal. These include Khordha with 912.9 mm, Kataka with 1145.1 mm, Puri with 945 mm, Mayurbhanj with 1174.4 mm and Sambalpur with 1325.6 mm.

Seven districts recorded large excess rainfall of 60% or more. Bargarh recorded 1438.7 mm, which is 72% above normal. Sonepur received 1495.1 mm with 80% departure, while Boudh recorded the highest departure at 106% with 1469.9 mm. Other districts in this category are Kendujhar with 1246 mm, Dhenkanal with 1213 mm, Baleshwar with 1300.9 mm and Kendrapada with 1189 mm.

Five districts reported normal rainfall, within 19% of the long-term average. These include Ganjam with 513.3 mm, Koraput with 753.3 mm, Rayagada with 560.5 mm and Kandhamal with 1020.3 mm.

Five districts, however, recorded deficient rainfall. Kalahandi received 772.9 mm, Malkangiri 707.2 mm, Nabarangpur 631.4 mm and Gajapati 413.2 mm. No district in the state has been categorized as ‘large deficient’ so far this season.

IMD officials said the active monsoon systems over the Bay of Bengal have led to widespread rainfall across the state, resulting in the significant surplus.
