Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed confidence in achieving the state’s ambitious target of producing 130 million tons per annum (MTPA) of steel by 2030, during his address at the Odisha State Roundtable at India Steel 2025 in Mumbai on Friday.
Highlighting Odisha’s position as India’s leading producer of iron ore and stainless steel, Majhi noted that the state currently hosts 54 integrated steel plants with a combined capacity of 41.21 MTPA. To meet the 130 MTPA steel target, Odisha will require approximately 190 million tons of iron ore annually. The state, which accounts for 58% of India’s iron ore production, aims to increase its share to 70% by 2030-31, contributing 240-245 MTPA to the projected national demand of 340 MTPA.
Majhi invited investors to capitalize on Odisha’s abundant resources, assuring them of sufficient supplies of iron ore, coal, and limestone. “All necessary materials are available within the state, eliminating the need to source externally. As steel production scales up, we will enhance mining output to support the industry,” he said.
To facilitate industrial growth, the state government has established a high-level task force to streamline project implementation, ensuring access to raw materials, encumbrance-free land, robust connectivity via roads and railways, and utilities like electricity and water. Majhi emphasized the government’s commitment to creating a comprehensive metal-based value chain, spanning raw materials to advanced engineering products.
The roundtable saw participation from over 200 delegates, including representatives from Tata Steel, AMNS, JSW, JSL, and SAIL. International attendees included Russia’s Coal Industry Development Director Bobylev Petr and Russian Trade Commission’s Head of Oil and Gas Artem Ukolov, who later discussed potential collaborations with Majhi.
The Chief Minister also engaged with representatives from the Indian Chemical Council, Dow Chemicals, Epsilon Carbon, Kothari Petrochemicals, Deepak Fertilisers, and the Indian Drug Manufacturers’ Association.
Odisha’s proactive measures and resource wealth position it as a prime destination for steel industry investments, aligning with its vision for industrial excellence by 2030.
