Nabarangpur: A 21-year-old woman was found dead under suspicious circumstances in Chacharaguda village under Kodinga police station limits in Nabarangpur district, triggering widespread outrage and grief among local residents.

The deceased, identified as Chandrabati Bhattara, was found lying in a pool of blood near her house on Monday morning. Family members have alleged that she was raped and murdered before her body was dumped in the backyard of the residence by the perpetrator, who subsequently fled the scene.

According to family members, Chandrabati had gone out to play with her friends on Sunday night. Her blood-soaked body was discovered the following morning, leaving relatives and villagers shocked.

Following the incident, the victim’s family and local residents staged a protest and refused to hand over the body for post-mortem examination until the accused is arrested.

Upon receiving information, Kodinga police, along with Nabarangpur Superintendent of Police Kashyap Parth Jagdish, reached the spot and launched an investigation. The SP said efforts are underway to ascertain the circumstances leading to the woman’s death.

A scientific team is also expected to visit the scene to collect forensic evidence as part of the investigation, the  SP added.

The incident has sparked anger in the area, with villagers and family members demanding the immediate arrest of the accused and stringent punishment for those responsible.

Police have not yet confirmed the allegations of sexual assault, and further details are expected to emerge following the post-mortem examination and forensic investigation.
